These 3 Repotting Mistakes Are Killing Your Flowers – You’re Making Them Right Now

Do you replant your plants in a beautiful pot, and after a week they wilt? You may be making fatal mistakes that you don’t even know about.

Here are some mistakes that many gardeners make automatically.

Mistakes of flower growers

The first is transplanting at the wrong time. Plants, like people, have their own biorhythms.

Touching them in winter or during flowering is like waking a sleeping bear. Wait until early spring, when active growth begins.

The second mistake is a pot that is too big to grow into. The roots in a container that is too big do not have time to master the space, and the soil turns sour.

The new pot should be only 2–3 cm wider than the old one.

The third trap is universal soil.

Cacti suffocate in dense soil, and orchids rot in ordinary soil. Buy a specialized substrate or mix it yourself: add sand for succulents, peat for violets.

But even if everything is done correctly, the plant may be “offended”.

After transplanting, do not put it in the sun - weakened roots will not cope with evaporation. Keep in the shade for 5-7 days and spray the leaves with water with the addition of epin (1 drop per glass).

And never water right away! Let the wounds on the roots heal - the first watering in 2-3 days. And if you notice that the leaves are turning yellow, check the drainage immediately. Stagnant water at the roots is certain death.

What to do if the plant “froze” after transplantation

Try "shock therapy". Place the pot in a cool place (+15–17°C) for 2–3 days - this will slow down the metabolic processes and give the roots time to recover.

And for succulents and orchids, add pieces of charcoal to the soil - it will prevent rotting. If you are replanting a cactus, do not water it for a week - the spines store moisture, and damaged roots can rot.

And don't forget about drainage.

The layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the pot should be at least 2 cm. For large plants, use broken brick or pebbles.

And if the roots have grown into the drainage holes, carefully cut them off with a sterile knife. And never take soil from the street!

It may contain pest larvae or fungal spores. Steam the soil in the oven at 100 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes or pour boiling water over it.

What about the aerial roots of a monstera or philodendron?

When replanting, do not bury them deeply - leave them on the surface, sprinkled with moss. They are needed to absorb moisture from the air.

And don’t touch store-bought plants for the first 2–3 weeks – let them adapt to the new conditions.

Transplanting immediately after purchase is double stress.
