Some summer residents practice growing banana trees on their plots of land.

They say the experiment is quite successful. The main feature is that the plant tolerates frosts very well.

We are talking about the three-lobed pawpaw (another name is “paw-paw”).

Your neighbors will definitely be surprised by such an exotic “guest” on your property in winter.

And they will be even more amazed by the fact that the plant produces tasty fruits, and how it produces them – like a cornucopia.

What kind of plant is this?

Asimina is a deciduous tree, usually growing up to 4-5 meters, in some cases it can grow up to 12 meters.

The amazing large leaves of the plant reach 35 centimeters. Isn't it a decorative decoration for your garden?

In spring, the tree pleases the eye with burgundy flowers, which attract pollinators with their unusual aroma.

The fruits resemble bananas, but the taste is more original: you can recognize notes of mango, pineapple, strawberry and melon.

Ripening occurs in autumn – the colour changes from green to yellow-brown.

Inside the fruit there are large seeds, arranged in two rows.

Care and cultivation

It is important to know that pawpaw loves sunny or slightly shaded, windless places.

As for the soil, it is recommended to plant in fertile soil with good drainage.

It is necessary to water the plant regularly, but do not allow water to stagnate.

In the first years after planting, it is better to cover young trees for the winter.

Pawpaw can be propagated by seeds (stratification, shoots appear after several months), grafting and root suckers.

Trees grown from seeds will bear their first fruits in 4-8 years, while grafted plants will bear their first fruits in 2-3 years.
