Pruning is one of the most important stages of raspberry care.

We tell you how to properly prune raspberries in the spring.

How to prune raspberries in spring

Spring pruning of raspberries is carried out in late March – April, depending on the weather.

The snow needs to have melted, but the soil has not yet warmed up.

Remove all frozen, damaged, weak branches. The rest should be shortened to the first healthy bud.

There should be 15-20 sprouts left per linear meter of planting. If there are more healthy branches left, do not feel sorry for them.

To ensure that raspberries bear fruit all summer, prune the bushes to different heights.

For example, we cut some bushes to half their height, some to 10-15 centimeters, and the rest so that 15-20 cm shoots remain.

In summer, raspberries also need to be pruned. First, during flowering, all diseased branches and leaves should be removed.

It is also advisable to remove young shoots at a distance of less than 20 cm from the center of the bush every two weeks.

To increase the yield, a double pruning method is used. In early June, we cut the tops by 5-7 cm.

This will redirect nutrients to the side heads. The sprouts that grow on them are bent to the ground in the fall and cut back by 10-15 cm in the spring.
