How to Properly Prepare a Tomato Bed for Next Year: The Secret to a Rich Harvest

After harvesting, gardeners think about how to tidy up the soil so that next year's harvest will be no worse, and maybe even better.

Of course, we are talking about applying fertilizers. And here the main thing is not to make a mistake with the choice, otherwise the efforts may be in vain.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told what fertilizer should be applied to the garden bed where tomatoes will grow.

Organic additives

It is no secret that some additives are washed out with precipitation and melt water, while others, on the contrary, do not have time to be absorbed if they are added at the wrong time.

To ensure that tomato seedlings take root well in the spring, it is recommended to add 10 liters of compost per 1 square meter of soil.

This fertilizer will replenish the lack of nutrients and also improve the soil structure.

Mineral supplements

In the fall, it is enough to add phosphorus fertilizers to the future tomato bed.

One of the most accessible additives for gardeners is phosphate flour.

As for other elements, nitrogen is not needed in the fall, and potassium will be washed away by rain and melt water before tomatoes begin to absorb it.

These additives can be added in the spring.

And if you add phosphorus in the spring, it simply won’t have time to transform into a form accessible to plants.
