Doesn't bloom or bear fruit: why grapes are in no hurry to please with a harvest

If you think that growing large and beautiful bunches of grapes is a piece of cake, then it’s just your imagination.

Such self-confidence is typical only of “young” gardeners, while experienced winegrowers know that they can be left without a harvest due to the slightest mistake.

1. One of such mistakes is the wrong place for grapes.

Do not place this crop in the shade of trees or buildings if you do not want to give your neighbors a new topic for gossip.

2. Lack of fruiting may be caused by short pruning.

In most varieties, the first 2-4 buds are sterile and practically do not produce clusters, so they need to be cut to an average length, which, by the way, is 6-10 buds.

You can even use long pruning to 14-18 buds.

3. The bushes will begin to grow into tops to the detriment of fruiting and if you overdo it with manure or nitrogen fertilizers.

To correct the mistake made, completely revise the fertilizers used.

4. Those who like to experiment with varieties should remember that there are now many varieties with a functionally female type of flowering.

This means that in order for them to bear fruit, they need a pollinator bush. The best choice is raisins, which are a universal pollinator for any variety.

And remember: the reason for this year’s crop failure should be sought in the past, since the grape harvest is not laid down in the current year, but a year earlier.
