Which blackberry shoots need to be cut out in autumn: they will dry out next year anyway

A moment of theory: garden blackberry is a plant with a two-cycle fruiting period.

The phrase, which is incomprehensible to many newbies, is deciphered by the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh as follows: blackberry fruits ripen on last year's shoots.

In the first year of its “life”, the shoot emerges from the ground, develops and gains strength.

In the second year, it produces flower stalks and bears fruit.

After fruiting, the shoot dries up and must be removed so that it does not take away excess juices and does not thicken the plantings, thereby preventing the penetration of sunlight and air circulation inside the bush.

Hence the conclusion: in the fall, first of all, it is worth pruning the faded shoots, which must be cut down to the ground, or even better - 0.5-1 cm below ground level.

In turn, the tops of young shoots that will bear fruit next year should be trimmed.

Those of them that are not bursting with health, but, on the contrary, are weak, should also be removed, since they are still thin, unripe, and will not produce good flowering.

Perhaps it is not necessary to remind that dry, diseased and broken branches should be trimmed.

All that remains is to dig out of the soil those branches that have already grown and emerged from the ground – they can become separate seedlings.
