Roses need special care, especially when the cold season comes.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist, landscape designer, told how to care for roses.
Gather the last harvest
The first thing to do in October is to harvest the last of the roses.
This is necessary to stimulate the growth of new shoots and buds in the next season.
Pick roses in the morning or evening when they are not yet fully bloomed.
Cut the stems at an angle at a height of 15-20 cm from the ground. Leave a few leaves on the bushes for photosynthesis.
Feed and water the roses
The second thing to do in October is to feed and water the roses. This is necessary to saturate the roses with nutrients and moisture before winter.
Feed roses with organic or mineral fertilizers that contain phosphorus and potassium, but not nitrogen.
Nitrogen promotes green growth, not flowers. Water roses generously, but not too often, so as not to cause root rot.
Trim and cover roses
The third thing to do in October is to prune and cover the roses. This is necessary to protect the roses from frost, snow, wind and rodents.
Cut the roses to a height of 30-40 cm from the ground, removing diseased, weak and damaged branches.
Cover the roses with various materials, such as straw, sawdust, spruce branches or special frames.
