Raspberry bushes must be prepared for winter so that you can enjoy a good harvest in the summer. Here are some tips to help you do this.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" - a scientist agronomist, landscape designer, told how to act in such a situation.
Pruning raspberry bushes in autumn
It is necessary to cut off all buds except the two lower ones. If more shoots are left uncut, the bushes will grow slowly and bear little fruit.
Owners who want to get a smaller number of berries, but of a significantly larger size, should trim the bushes at a height of one meter.
If you leave the bushes 1.5-2 meters in size and bend them to the ground, the raspberries will be small, but in large quantities.
Pruning raspberry bushes in spring
This method is suitable for people who live in places where winters are quite warm.
Due to this, the soil does not freeze and premature pruning of bushes can provoke the untimely appearance of buds on the rhizome.
Some owners prune the following spring, after the first harvest. In addition, in the spring you can more accurately examine the quality of the shoots, which of them are damaged, dried out and weak.
When removing unnecessary shoots, thick new trunks should remain, which are 10-20 cm high. It is necessary to maintain a distance of 60 cm between bushes.
Abundant watering and wetting of bushes
Good watering and wetting will ensure a bountiful harvest of raspberries and protect the bushes from drying out.
Removing leaves from bushes in autumn
When removing leaves, you need to be very careful not to damage the raspberry buds.
It is important to remove the leaves because they can rot and create unnecessary moisture near the bushes.
Then you need to bend the raspberries to the ground, preferably below 50 cm, and secure them with wire. This will help prevent the raspberries from freezing under the snow cover.
