The basis of competent farming is crop rotation of cultivated plants. By planting the same crop in one place for several years in a row, you can be left without a harvest and reduce the fertile soil layer to nothing.
This summer cottage season is coming to an end, and if not for everyone, then for most gardeners, the beds are already empty.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told what to plant in a garden bed after tomatoes.
What to plant after tomatoes
It's time to start making plans for the new season's harvest.
Remember that growing tomatoes depletes the soil, as the crop is demanding in terms of nutrient content.
Therefore, the best solution at the moment is to sow green manure, and in the next season you can sow the following crops.
1. A good harvest will be produced by legumes (peas, beans and beans), which saturate the soil with nitrogen.
2. You can also consider planting leafy vegetables and greens. They are not demanding of nutrients and will give a good harvest even after tomatoes.
3. Root vegetables include carrots, beets, radishes and celery.
4. With the same success you can plant any type of cabbage.
You can't plant after tomatoes
Crops of the nightshade family are prohibited (except for tomatoes, these are potatoes, peppers and eggplants).
In this case, the harvest will be low, and the risk of late blight spreading will increase.
You should also not plant cucumbers, which will not produce a rich harvest in soil depleted by tomatoes.
