It is believed that there is no need to rush with the carrot harvest. The vegetable tolerates the first autumn cold well and, in general, carrots are not the most delicate crop.
In fact, you need to focus on the dates indicated by the seed producer, and then listen to the advice of your neighbors on the site.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, reminded summer residents of the most important thing.
About varietal characteristics
First of all, in matters of harvesting, it is necessary to take into account the varietal characteristics of carrots. There are:
- early ripening – usually harvested in July;
- mid-season – harvest at the end of August or the beginning of September;
- late - harvesting at the end of September.
About the weather
But in addition to varietal characteristics, the ripening of carrots is influenced by weather, fertilizers and care.
For example, in a dry summer, the ripening of the crop will depend, among other things, on whether the gardener followed the watering regime.
About the signs of maturity
A sign of carrot ripening is the tops, or more precisely, the yellowing lower shoots.
The harvest is collected on a fine day so that the vegetables have time to dry.
You need to trim the tops, and then, before storing, keep the carrots in a dark, well-ventilated and cool place for 24 hours, after which they can be put away for long-term storage.
