August has arrived - a very important period for gardeners. Including those who grow tomatoes.
Incorrect watering of tomatoes during the final month of summer can result in the loss of a significant portion of the ripening harvest.
How to water the plant correctly so that all the fruits that form are not only preserved, but also become very tasty?
An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh shared important recommendations.
Frequency of watering
The owner of a summer cottage should understand that ripening tomatoes need a considerable amount of water.
The reason is simple: the garden crop has quite powerful roots that go deep into the soil.
But watering tomatoes too often in August is a mistake. Due to excess moisture, the vegetables will become cracked and watery.
In August, 2 waterings per week will be enough. Each plant should receive one watering can of water.
This rule must be followed if tomatoes are grown in a greenhouse.
If the garden crop grows in open ground, it is necessary to take into account the weather conditions: frequent precipitation is a reason to temporarily abandon the watering procedure.
Morning watering
In August, you shouldn't water tomatoes during the day: due to high air temperatures, moisture can evaporate quickly.
Evening watering is a good option, but it is hardly ideal.
At the end of summer, it is better to water tomatoes in the morning. Warm water will improve the condition of the soil that has "survived" a cold night (and there will be many such nights in August).
Water temperature
By the way, regarding how warm the liquid used for watering should be...
It is desirable that the temperature indicator be +30 (or slightly more) degrees.
Using cold water can seriously damage the condition of your garden crop.
Watering at the root
The liquid should not get on the plant itself. Only the soil cover directly under the plant should be moistened.
