What to do with onions whose feathers have turned yellow and fallen prematurely: advice from experienced gardeners

As you know, onion feathers are quite fragile, which makes them easy to damage.

Although they can withstand the onslaught of light rains, heavy rains and strong winds cause them to break and fall over.

Of course, we cannot resist the forces of nature, so all that remains is to wait for the end of the season.

Even though the onion feathers are lying down, the outflow of nutrients does not stop, but only slows down, so the bulbs can still increase in size.

But there is another reason why a summer resident may encounter such an unpleasant phenomenon – downy mildew.

In spring and early summer the disease usually does not manifest itself; it usually makes itself known closer to the middle of the season.

First, the tips of the feathers turn yellow, then they turn pale, curl up and fall to the ground.

The disease seriously affects the yield: the bulbs become smaller, ripen worse and are poorly stored.

If the disease does not progress, sprinkle the onion beds with wood ash (50 grams per square meter). Repeat the procedure in 5-7 days.

In case of severe infestation, treat the onion with a one percent solution of Bordeaux mixture, but remember that it can be used no later than two weeks before harvesting.
