What to do if moss and lichens appear on a tree: don’t clean it off – it won’t help

Summer residents who have noticed that moss and lichen have appeared on the trees in their garden are wondering: what should they do in this case?

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about the correct actions in such a situation.

To begin with, it is worth saying that moss and lichens on trees do not harm plants in any way - they can appear both on old plantings and on young branches.

There is a possibility that these "formations" may become a refuge for some pests, but in general they are harmless and there is no need to do anything against them.

Why do they appear? Mosses and lichens can be a signal that the growth processes of a tree or shrub have slowed down because the plant is underfed and the garden needs to be fertilized.

But you shouldn’t scrape off the growths, because the tree bark is like human skin: it is constantly renewed and peels off.

If the plant is growing well, its shoots will become thicker and the bark will naturally crack and fall off, taking mosses and lichens with it.
