When choosing a place to plant beets, many people do not take into account the specific features, thereby making a serious mistake.
Therefore, it is worth figuring out where to plant beets in order to ultimately get a good harvest.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to act in such a situation.
Lighting: sunny areas are preferred
Beets love light and warmth, so you should choose well-lit areas for planting them.
Full sunlight throughout the day will ensure active photosynthesis and rapid plant growth. In the shade, beets may grow poorly developed and with small roots.
Soil requirements
There are two key requirements: good drainage and fertility. If the water in the soil stagnates, the root crops will not be able to develop normally.
It is also worth remembering that the soil must be loose. For example, if you plant in clay soil, the fruits will not be able to develop normally.
Acidity level
Beets grow well in soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH level, within the range of 6.0–7.5.
Acidic soils can negatively affect beet growth and its ability to absorb nutrients. If the soil in the area is highly acidic, liming can be used to neutralize it.
Humidity
Beets require moderate watering. Lack of moisture can cause the roots to become tough and inedible.
However, too much moisture is also harmful as it can cause root rot. Therefore, it is important to ensure good drainage in the area so that excess water can drain freely.
Crop rotation
It is also worth remembering about proper crop rotation. You should not plant if last season the following grew in this place:
1) cabbage;
2) turnip;
3) broccoli.
Ideal predecessors for beets are:
• legumes;
• potato;
• tomatoes;
• green crops.
Crop rotation is key and many people ignore it in vain.
