“What rootstock should I choose for seedlings?” – this question often worries summer residents at the very beginning of their “gardening” journey.
The answer to this question was found by an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .
If the region is dry and there are problems with irrigation, then you should choose seedlings on seed rootstocks.
They form a powerful root system that goes deep into the ground - for example, the roots of an apple tree can reach a depth of 3-5 meters in search of water.
If the plants are on clonal rootstocks, then abundant watering is recommended to deepen the roots, rather than pruning.
The thing is that if you trim the roots and water them superficially, they will still remain in the top layer of soil, since the roots grow where there is water.
Abundant watering of 5-6 buckets per square meter of crown projection ensures the saturation of the entire root ball, and the roots go deeper.
One or two such waterings per season with 5-7 buckets of water per square meter is enough.
Finally, we will share one more useful tip: mulching the tree trunk circle will help prevent the roots from drying out.
