Growing radishes seems like a simple and understandable task for most gardeners. But even this crop can present unpleasant surprises that baffle even experienced gardeners.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to avoid these difficulties and get a good harvest of radishes.
Problems with growing radishes mainly arise from a lack of understanding of the characteristics of biology and agricultural technology.
Radishes are a long-day plant, and in the summer, when daylight hours are longer than 18 hours, they quickly enter the flowering phase, causing the roots to become tough and inedible – and this is completely normal for radishes.
But for us, those who want to get a good harvest of sweet and crunchy radishes, we need to get root crops, not seeds, and for this we need to provide a short daylight period of about 10-12 hours.
In addition to the above, there are other reasons for radish stemming.
It has been found that the crop often begins to bloom when old seeds are used. It is recommended to plant only fresh seeds.
Another reason is too dense planting. For the best yield, it is recommended to thin the plantings to ensure enough space for each plant.
And the last, fourth factor is insufficient watering. Remember, radishes are just as much of a water-drinker as cabbage, and even worse.
