Due to hard water, which becomes hard due to the content of calcium and magnesium, the root system of plants loses all chances for normal development and obtaining sufficient nutrients from the soil.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed methods that help soften the water used for irrigation.
Boiling
During boiling, most of the salts contained in the water precipitate. However, there is a downside - as a result, the liquid loses many useful substances and oxygen.
Preparations
To soften water, you can also use various additives, for example, the drug "Waterfall", which you need 300 ml per 30 liters of water. The product binds magnesium and calcium salts.
Wood ash (peat)
Another option is to use wood ash or peat. Add a teaspoon of wood ash or a tablespoon of peat to a quart of water and mix well. Let the water sit for a few hours to remove excess alkali from the wood ash or acid from the peat.
Filtration
You can also run the water through a household filter for additional purification or use distilled water, but keep in mind that both of these methods remove some beneficial minerals from the water.
