Green manure crops are the little green friends of the summer resident and gardener.
It is simply impossible to overestimate the benefits of these plants. They fertilize, improve and loosen the soil, drive away pests, and some are honey plants.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told which green manure crops can be sown now.
What to sow
1. Most often, gardeners are advised to sow white mustard.
Mustard sprouts quite quickly and after emergence, in just a couple of weeks, it covers the garden with a dense carpet, which inhibits the growth of weeds.
Once the seedlings are planted in the soil, mustard will become an excellent fertilizer.
Until this time, the green manure will repel harmful insects.
Wireworms, slugs and snails dislike it the most.
Mustard also helps reduce the risk of developing late blight and root rot.
2. Another popular green manure is phacelia.
In terms of its properties, rotted phacelia is almost as good as manure.
Phacelia is recommended to be grown in areas with depleted soil.
In addition to fighting late blight, pests and weeds, phacelia normalizes soil acidity.
It is noteworthy that both green manure crops can be sown after the snow melts.
