To get a large harvest of currants in the summer, you need to start caring for them in early spring.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells us what needs to be done with currants at the beginning of spring.
How to care for currants in early spring
In early spring, currant bushes need to be pruned, tied up, treated against diseases and pests, and fertilized.
It is advisable to carry out the first treatment against diseases and pests before the buds swell.
But there is no need to rush with fertilizing in the spring. The first fertilizing is usually done at the end of March – beginning of April.
It is better to apply fertilizers early in the morning or in the evening, so that the sun does not burn the leaves when the solution hits them.
Earlier, the expert told whether it is possible to get good grapes from a seed.
