To grow large onions, you need to choose the right place for planting.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells how to choose a place for an onion bed.
Where to plant onions
Onions love light, loose and fertile soil. Acidic, saline and swampy soils are not suitable.
You also cannot plant onions where garlic, turnips, radishes, carrots and beets were previously grown.
Onions grow well after legumes (peas, beans, alfalfa), cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, mustard, rutabaga) and cereals (rye, wheat, barley).
Onions also feel great after herbaceous green manure (phacelia, calendula, stock).
Mustard is an ideal predecessor for onions.
Previously, we talked about which plants can be planted in one area for several seasons in a row.
