Experienced gardeners know how important it is to cover conifers for the winter. But if not everyone has time for this procedure in the fall, then in the winter seasoned gardeners go out of their way to have time to throw on the cover.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh gave an explanation for such seemingly illogical actions.

The answer to the question of why you need to cover coniferous trees if winter is already ending is very simple: the plants are protected not from frost, but from the sun's rays, which can be dangerous for them.

Have you noticed that many thujas, ornamental firs, pines and other conifers have a reddish tint in the spring?

This phenomenon is not always the result of frostbite, as many people think, but a consequence of sunburn.

Needles, like leaves, require moisture all year round. In winter, the root system freezes, and moisture is supplied in insufficient quantities, especially if moisture-charging irrigation was not carried out in the fall.

When the sun begins to actively warm, moisture evaporates from the needles faster, and photosynthesis occurs more actively. All this leads to the drying of the needles.

Therefore, if you do not want the plants in your area to lose their decorative effect, cover them with burlap, light cotton fabric or special nets.
