Snow in the garden and on the beds in winter is a kind of investment in the future harvest. The more snow, the more moisture the soil will receive in the spring.
Gardeners and vegetable growers, wanting to outwit nature, are constantly doing something clever, including with precipitation, and insist that the snow under the trees needs to be trampled down.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, an agronomist and landscape designer, told us what to expect from this method and whether it is worth wasting time on all sorts of nonsense.
Against rodents
If you believe what they say, then thanks to this simple technique you can protect trees from rodents. That is, mice will not be able to dig a hole in the trampled snow and will leave empty-handed.
But, as practice shows, mice make entire tunnels in denser materials than compacted snow.
Protection from cold
It is believed that trampled snow will protect tree roots from freezing. But this is also a myth, and all because loose snow warms the ground no worse and all thanks to the air layer.
Return frosts
This is the only valid argument. There are simply no other reasons for this procedure.
The more snow there is in the trunk area, the later the tree will wake up, which means there is less risk that the garden will suffer from recurrent frosts.
But it is important to remember that apricot and some varieties of cherry can suffer from snow due to rotting of the root collar.
Earlier we talked about why it is not possible to grow strong cabbage seedlings .
