Growing strawberries may seem like a complicated process, but if you follow a few simple rules, the effort will pay off and you will definitely get a great harvest.
In this article, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about four basic rules that will help you enjoy tasty and aromatic berries every year.
Refresh your berry patch regularly
Strawberries, unlike raspberries and currants, cannot grow in one place for many years without renewal. They need to be constantly replanted and cared for in order to get a bountiful harvest every year.
In the first two or three years after planting, the berries are large and tasty. But after 3-4 years, they become smaller and lose their taste. Therefore, after three years of fruiting, it is better to replace the strawberry bed with a new one, broken up in another area and planted with runners with roots from healthy plants.
Mulch strawberries
In the fall, you can add compost under the strawberry bushes, which helps protect the roots from freezing in the winter and provides the plants with nutrients in the spring.
In the spring, it makes sense to cover the bed with straw, which retains moisture, prevents weed growth and protects the berries from dirt, and in the summer - with mown grass, which will become an additional source of nutrition.
Don't ignore preventive treatments
Preventive treatments will save your strawberries from weevils, rot and spotting.
For this purpose, in the spring you can use a tank mixture of 50 ml of Bordeaux mixture and 10 ml of Fitoverm.
Water the strawberry plant
Watering should be regular and abundant, to wet the roots completely, not only in hot weather (during this period, the soil should be moistened every 3-4 days), but also after harvesting.
