Large onions will grow a month earlier than your neighbors if you follow certain planting rules.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells us how to plant onions correctly.
How to plant onions
In spring, onions are planted in early May. The soil needs to warm up, otherwise the onions will start to bolt.
In autumn, they are planted before frost, but in still warm soil, from approximately October 5 to 20.
The soil should be loose. Onions may not sprout on clay soil; it needs to be prepared by growing green manure or adding rotted compost.
Do not plant the onion too deep; it should grow on the soil surface, not deep. This way the onion will grow larger and will be stored better.
