Fertilizers based on eggshells or banana peels are especially popular among the people.

If you wish, you can find a recipe for making fertilizer from hair, sugar, yeast and other improvised means and household waste.

An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what mistakes are made when fertilizing indoor plants.

Eggshell

The shell is 95% calcium, which is needed by plants. However, pouring crushed shells into all the pots with indoor plants does not make sense.

For violets and azaleas, such feeding may be harmful. For the same reason, these flowers should not be watered with hard tap water.

It is important to remember that excess calcium can cause chlorosis and alkalize the soil, which is harmful to plants that require neutral or slightly acidic soil.

Sugar

Sugar is often added to home fertilizers as a plant stimulant. It is believed that cut flowers will last longer if sugar is added to the water.

But excess sugar in the soil can cause midges to appear.

Coffee and brewing

In order for this waste to turn into fertilizer, it must be processed by soil microorganisms and earthworms. However, they are not found in a pot with indoor plants, and there is very little soil microflora.

But if you diligently feed the flowers with these additives, then worms will definitely appear, but you will have to save the plants from them.

Hair

Hair is also not suitable for feeding for the simple reason that it takes several decades for it to decompose in the soil.

It's easier to throw them away right away and use ready-made fertilizers
