Some summer residents prepare the mixture for planting seedlings with their own hands, while others prefer to buy ready-made ones in the store.
But can we assume that in soil labeled “for tomatoes” on the package, tomato seedlings will grow like crazy?
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to choose soil.
What kind of soil is needed?
Firstly, the soil must absorb and retain moisture well, while remaining loose.
Secondly, the soil must contain sufficient nutrients.
Thirdly, remember about pH balance (neutral pH 6-7).
What is included in the composition
Most often, the basis is made up of high-moor and low-lying peat.
The first one absorbs water better, is quite loose and porous. Sour. There is almost no organic matter in it.
Lowland peat is rich in organic matter, but less breathable.
To neutralize acidity, the manufacturer adds dolomite flour or lime.
To keep the soil loose and prevent compaction, river sand or agroperlite (vermiculite) is added to it.
The composition must include organic matter.
What to look out for
You need to find information about the amount of nitrogen on the packaging.
There should not be much of it, as excess provokes rapid growth, which is not beneficial for immunity and future yields. Lack of nitrogen will require early fertilizing.
It is believed that universal and flower soil with a nitrogen level of 300-350 mg per liter and more is not suitable for seedlings. These compositions can be used for stronger plants.
Also, do not forget that the soil should contain additives such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, copper and iron, boron and zinc.
The fertilizer complex should be in chelated form – it is better absorbed by young plants.
