How to Help Conifers Survive the Winter: It's in Your Power

Many summer residents, who have only recently immersed themselves in the amazing world of plant growing, for some reason think that there is no need to prepare conifers for winter.

However, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh draws attention to the fact that today many coniferous plants have appeared on household plots, which react sharply to changes in the weather, especially in the winter season.

In view of this, the specialist advises to begin preparatory work already in August - from this month it is time to stop applying fertilizers.

Focus on deciduous trees: as soon as they start to shed their leaves, you can begin winter watering of conifers. You must have time to carry out this "procedure" before the ground freezes.

Winter watering of conifers is especially important if autumn is dry. Water in 2 stages: this way the moisture will be absorbed better. Watch where you pour water: the radius of watering should be approximately equal to the radius of the crown.

Mulching prevents moisture evaporation, so it would be a good idea to cover the trunk circle of conifers with bark or spruce branches. The mulching material should be removed when spring comes – this way the soil will warm up faster.

Another important step is to strengthen the crown of coniferous plants. To do this, tie the branches with rope or netting, but not too tightly, so that the plantings do not rot from the inside.

Strengthen young but tall plants with guy ropes so that wind or snow cannot bend them. This recommendation applies to conifers on a standard.

Earlier, the expert shared tips that will help make the soil on the site soft and airy, like fluff.
