For gardeners who have permanent greenhouses installed on their plots, it’s time to start throwing snow inside.
As vegetable crops bear fruit, the soil here becomes worse, and agricultural errors can worsen the situation. Snow will help preserve the properties of the soil in the greenhouse.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how much snow there should be in a greenhouse in winter and when it can be thrown in.
Why is there snow in the greenhouse?
The greenhouse is protected from the wind, but not from temperature changes in winter. If the soil is left without snow, it will dry out. The soil microflora may also suffer.
A layer of snow protects against all these troubles, and melt water benefits plants and increases productivity.
The layer thickness should be no less than 50 cm. If weather conditions allow, you can throw snow in a layer of up to 1 meter, but no more.
When to start
It makes sense to start immediately after a snowfall. Loose and fluffy snow is thrown inside and not compacted.
Better not to start
For summer residents whose plots are located in lowlands or whose groundwater is shallow, storing snow in a greenhouse does not make sense.
