Growing green onions on a windowsill is not difficult, but you need to follow certain rules.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells how to properly grow green onions at home.
How to Grow Green Onions
Firstly, onions need a low temperature during germination – +16-18 degrees.
It is overheating at the beginning of growth that causes onion feathers to taste bitter.
Secondly, the onion needs to be warmed up and cut. First, pour warm water (+25-28 degrees) over the onion and leave for several hours, then cut it to the shoulders or by one third. This way, the onion will sprout faster.
Thirdly, onions do not like cold water. This applies to both watering and growing in water.
When planting in the soil, it is necessary to take into account that it must be warmed up. The soil is warmed up by watering with warm water.
It is also important not to plant the bulbs too deep into the soil. It is enough to plant them 1/3 deep.
