I hear the ringing, but I don’t know where it is, this old proverb accurately helps to describe the attitude of some summer residents to pruning currants, who know about the need to carry out this procedure, but are not familiar with its subtleties.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained why the number of berries decreases after pruning currant bushes.
The reason is that during the procedure, productive and fruit-bearing shoots were removed.
Before you start pruning, remember that blackcurrant shoots bear fruit for up to six years.
For the red and white it is even longer: this period lasts for eight years.
However, you should expect berries only from those shoots that are correctly located in the bush.
For example, branches that, although they are at an age suitable for fruiting, lie near the soil surface and are considered unproductive.
The same characteristic applies to shoots that intersect with other branches in a currant bush, and to branches growing inward. These shoots, regardless of their age, are subject to removal.
