Not all plants are good neighbors with apple trees, and some of them can even harm them. What crops should not be planted next to apple trees and why?

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told which crops are best not to plant next to apple trees.

Potato

Potatoes are one of the most popular and widespread vegetable crops, which are often planted in gardens and vegetable plots.

However, potatoes are not suitable for proximity to apple trees, as they attract pests such as the Colorado potato beetle, wireworm, mole cricket and others, which can damage not only potatoes, but also apple trees.

In addition, potatoes and apple trees compete for nutrients and moisture in the soil, which can lead to a deterioration in the yield and quality of the fruit.

Cabbage

Cabbage is another vegetable crop that is not recommended to be planted next to apple trees.

The reason is the same - cabbage attracts pests such as whitefly, cabbage moth, cabbage flea beetle and others, which can fly to apple trees and cause damage to them.

Raspberry

Raspberry is a berry crop that is also not suitable for growing next to apple trees.

Raspberries can be carriers of various diseases, such as anthracnose, powdery mildew, gray mold and others, which can spread to apple trees and affect their health and productivity.

In addition, raspberries and apple trees have different watering and care regimes, which can create inconveniences when cultivating the garden.

What crops grow well with apple trees?

Among the plants that grow well next to apple trees, the following can be highlighted.

Onions, garlic, carrots, radishes, horseradish, beets, lettuce, dill, parsley and other green and root crops that repel pests with their smell and do not compete with apple trees for food and moisture.

Lupines, peas, beans, clover, alfalfa and other legumes that enrich the soil with nitrogen and improve its structure, and also attract beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies and ladybugs that pollinate flowers and control pests.

Calendula, chamomile, daisy, marigold, asters, carnations, roses and other flower crops that decorate the garden with their colors and aromas, and also protect apple trees from diseases and pests with their phytoncides and essential oils.
