If you are new to growing tuberous begonias, you may not be aware that the plant requires preparation in anticipation of cold weather.
Expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh reminds: unlike other types of begonias, this flower needs a rest, which lasts from November to February.
When winter gives way to spring, you will have to start planting tubers in pots again.
So, let's get down to preparation. In November, when the begonia foliage turns yellow and dries up along with the entire above-ground part, it's time to start pruning the shoots.
Make the cut at a distance of 2-3 cm from the soil surface, after which you can remove the tubers from the ground.
The underground part of the begonia (those same tubers) can be stored in a cellar or other room where you are sure that the temperature will not drop below zero degrees.
If you live in an apartment and not in a private house, you can try the following method of storing tubers: first dry them and then bury them in a box.
But even in this case, it is worth finding a cool place for the planting material so that in March they can be planted in flower pots, safe and sound.
