Due to inexperience, summer residents can put dahlias away for storage in such a way that they will not sprout in the spring.
That's why it's so important to choose the right place to store these flowers. There are several options that will help keep the seedlings from drying out and sprouting.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to preserve dahlias in winter.
Summer residents' mistake
In order to protect dahlias without harm, flowers should not be stored at room temperature, or in other rooms where the air temperature can rise to 26 degrees Celsius.
Under such conditions, the roots of the flowers will begin to dry out and may not germinate after planting.
Where to store flowers
The most important condition for storing flowers is the absence of light and coolness.
1. The roots are divided into parts so that each has a bud. The paraffin is melted in a steam bath and the plant roots are placed in it.
You need to act quickly to avoid burning the roots.
Flowers are stored in a closet or basement until spring. They are planted together with paraffin.
2. Divide the flowers into parts and place them in the refrigerator, in the vegetable compartment. First, treat them with a solution of "Fitosporin-M", and then remove the roots into kraft paper.
3. The same method as with paraffin. You need to prepare a liquid solution of clay and dip the plants in it 2-3 times, then dry. Store in the basement, and soak in water before planting.
4. If you store dahlias on a balcony or insulated loggia, you can place the plants in containers and cover them with vermiculite in a layer of up to 10 cm. It is important that the air temperature on the balcony does not fall below +5 degrees Celsius during storage.
