Cherry pruning, which is traditionally done in the fall, largely depends on the variety, shape of the tree and other factors.
However, there are also standard rules that not only can be used, but, moreover, must be used if you undertake this procedure, says the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .
Firstly, in order not to harm the cherry tree, the first tier of branches should not have a deviation from the trunk exceeding 40 degrees.
Secondly, if we are talking about large and old branches, they should be cut “to the ring”.
This means that at their base there are ring-shaped growths, which must be carefully removed along the upper contour.
When doing this, try not to leave any stumps or damage behind.
Thirdly, it is strictly forbidden to cut the tree with the ring. If you disobey, be prepared for the fact that such actions will provoke the beginning of such processes as wood cracking, bark rotting and the formation of a hollow.
Fourthly, we will talk about cutting “to the bud”, which is carried out to form the correct crown shape.
If you want to thicken the cherry, remove the inner bud and, conversely, for thinning - the outer one. Pruning is done at an angle, retreating from the growth point by 5 mm.
