It doesn’t matter where you are going to harvest tomato tops – in open ground beds or in a greenhouse – you shouldn’t throw them away.
Instead, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh advises to use the “raw materials” you received with benefit.
And you have as many as 3 options for this.
1. Ash
If you expose the remaining tomato tops to the fire, the result will be ash, which contains a large amount of phosphorus and potassium.
By the way, according to experienced gardeners, they receive valuable fertilizer even if the plants were infected with late blight.
2. Compost
You can get another, no less useful fertilizer from the tops – compost. However, in this case you can use plant remains only from those tomato bushes that do not show signs of any diseases.
3. Infusion
And an infusion prepared from tomato tops will help you in the fight against pests.
One clarification: by the time plant debris is collected, there is usually no need to protect vegetables, so use the prepared infusion for fruit trees.
