Visual signs
If you forgot about the planting time, you can determine the ripening period by visual signs. As a rule, the feathers are the first to "give in": if they "lie down" on the bed, then you can safely dig up the onion.
By this time the feathers become yellow.
You can also dig up one bulb and pay attention to how its root system looks: if the crop is fully ripe, the roots will look dry and small in size.
