In June, you need to plan and complete 5 important tasks to ensure that you get a bountiful blueberry harvest this year.
There is nothing complicated ahead, but all these procedures are considered mandatory and should not be forgotten. This includes watering, mulching, acidification and other important matters.
1. Watering
Blueberries love moisture, and during the growing season, especially in hot summer, you need to control this moment. One adult bush requires 10 liters of water at intervals of 1-2 times a week.
It is important to remember that too much water is more dangerous than too little.
2. Loosening and weeding
Weeding is important for young bushes, but in other cases weeds must also be removed, otherwise the risk of developing bacterial and fungal diseases will only increase.
Loosening of the soil is carried out after watering - as soon as the water is absorbed. It is important not to damage the roots, so the depth is no more than 5 cm.
3. Mulching
This technique allows you to reduce the frequency of watering, deal with weeds less, and loosen the soil less often.
The bark of coniferous trees, the needles themselves, rotted sawdust, peat (high moor), and cones (spruce) are used.
4. Acidification
The suitable soil acidity level for this crop was in the range of 3.5-4.5 pH.
You can use citric acid (3 tsp per 10 l of warm water) or vinegar (9% table vinegar – 100 ml per 10 l of water).
5. Protection from birds
And the last thing that will help save the harvest is a bird net. A product with 2.5 cm cells is used. Supports are installed above the bush and the net is stretched so that it is 30 cm higher than the bush.
