Why agronomists always add soil to compost – a trick your summer cottage neighbor won’t tell you about

Composting helps reduce the amount of organic waste in your garden. It is also an environmentally friendly way to dispose of organic waste, which helps reduce the amount of garbage in landfills and dumps.

In addition, using compost as a fertilizer allows you to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. But obtaining high-quality organic fertilizer requires certain skills and knowledge of some tricks.

Agronomists use one of these tricks. They always add soil to organic matter.

Why do we need land?

Composting is the process of converting organic waste into a nutrient substrate for plants. The recycling process involves microorganisms that transform grass, sawdust and cleanings into nutrient-rich soil.

This process is similar to what happens naturally in nature. Grass, leaves, branches, even dead animals are processed by soil microorganisms into humus, which plants feed on.

By adding 20-30% of soil to a compost heap, you populate it with soil microorganisms, which speeds up the organic matter processing process. Microorganisms contained in the soil quickly "get to work", which increases the rate of decomposition of organic waste.

In addition, the soil helps maintain optimal humidity and temperature, which also helps speed up the composting process. Microorganisms can only live in a humid environment, and leaves, stems and other "loose" ingredients dry out quickly. The soil compacts them and keeps them moist.

Another function of the soil is to absorb nitrogen. This is especially important when composting manure. A huge amount of nitrogen simply evaporates into the air during decomposition. If you add 30% of soil to manure and other waste, it will absorb nitrogen and retain it until it is added to the garden bed. Thus, the effectiveness of natural fertilizer increases.

If you already have good compost, you can use it to populate a new compost heap with useful microflora. It contains much more of it than ordinary soil. And do not forget that it is necessary to constantly keep the contents of the compost heap moist, otherwise the microorganisms will not work.
