An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told when it is necessary to remove arrows from garlic.
Gardeners often have different opinions on this topic. There are two main versions of the answer to this question. The first say that it should be done as quickly as possible. Others wait until the feathers become larger.
When to remove arrows
The arrows need to be removed as soon as they appear. This can be done with scissors or simply broken off. Otherwise, there will be an empty consumption of nutrients. This will affect the size of the heads.
There is only a point in waiting a little longer if you want to use the garlic shoots for pickling. But even here it is better not to delay their removal too much.
Why remove arrows
What happens after cutting the garlic shoots? The plant redistributes the flow of nutrients. All free resources are directed to the development of the underground part.
Delete, but not all
A couple of shoots can be left in order not to miscalculate the moment of harvesting. As the heads ripen, the coils straighten out, and inflorescences appear on the tops.
Once the film on them bursts, the fruit will reach its maximum size, but will not have time to crumble into individual cloves. This is the ideal moment for harvesting.
