Thanks to breeders, even those summer residents who do not live in regions with a subtropical climate have the opportunity to grow watermelons - the main thing is to choose an early-ripening variety with a growing season of no more than 75-80 days.

If you are also “eager” to try a watermelon from your own plot, listen to the advice of the expert of the online publication “BelNovosti”, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

According to the specialist, fertilizers have a great influence on the results of watermelon growing.

It is worth fertilizing the crop not once, but three times: in the 6-7 leaf phase, before flowering and at the beginning of fruiting.

Water-soluble complex fertilizers are the best choice for this purpose.

Don't forget about the importance of watering - from the moment you see the shoots and until the first fruits are set, you will have to moisten the soil in the beds every 10-12 days.

If we talk about the ripening period, watering is needed even more often – once a week.

Finally, we will share one more secret: as soon as you notice that 2-5 fruits have formed on the plants, pinch the top above the fourth leaf. The remaining ovaries should be removed without mercy: the watermelon will not be able to “feed” them anyway.

When the fruits reach the size of a chicken egg, they should be placed in a net and tied with twine to a trellis.
