Many summer residents, on whose plots you can see lilac bushes, believe that this crop does not require special care.

However, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh assures: if you show due attention to lilacs, the stunted bushes will turn into lush, abundantly flowering plants.

Caring for lilacs includes such procedures as watering, fertilizing, pruning and loosening the soil.

But there is another “operation” that will significantly simplify the cultivation of spreading plants covered with flowers.

Mulching, known to all plant growers, will help to achieve better moisture retention, protect the root system from overheating, and maintain the quality of the soil and its structure.

The first time you should mulch the soil under the lilac is after planting, when you have thoroughly watered the seedling.

Make sure that the mulch layer is between 5 and 7 cm. This thickness of mulch should be maintained at all times.

What materials can be used? Peat, humus, half-rotted leaves, compost are suitable for lilacs.

Please note: to preserve young seedlings during the first winter, you need to create a new protective mulch-covering layer for them. To implement this idea, you will need a layer of leaves or peat up to 10 cm high.
