Hydrangeas are popular not only because of their lush flowering "caps", but also because of their ability to change color.
However, this trick does not work for everyone. For example, the white tree-like large-leaved hydrangea will not change color, so you can save time.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to change the color of hydrangea.
Large-leaved (garden) hydrangeas of blue and pink color can be recolored. White varieties also do not change color.
To make hydrangea blue
Bright blue "caps" adorn the hydrangea, which grows in acidic soil. In addition, the soil must contain aluminum. For this, gardeners use:
- potassium aluminum alum;
- aluminum sulfate;
- colloidal sulfur.
In addition, if the soil is slightly acidic or alkaline, vinegar is added - 100 ml per 10 liters of water. The flower is watered twice a month.
To make hydrangea pink
Pink hydrangea will be if the reaction is neutral, i.e. it is necessary to reduce the acidity of the soil. For this, dolomite, chalk or lime are added, and phosphorus is also used.
But it is important to be careful. If you make the soil too alkaline, the hydrangea will not bloom and will get chlorosis. You do not need to deacidify the soil too much, otherwise it will change color.
