It is impossible to imagine any garden or summer cottage without a compost pit. With its help, you can turn organic waste into useful fertilizer - compost.

Under anaerobic conditions, microorganisms in the soil and organic matter convert plant debris into nutrients.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to make a compost pit correctly.

1. Select a location for the compost bin on your property that will be easily accessible for storing vegetation.

2. Determine the size of the compost pit. It depends on the amount of organic materials you plan to process. On average, it is 1.5-2 meters wide and 0.8-1 meter deep.

3. You need to prepare the soil for the compost pit by mixing leaves, mown grass, sawdust or straw.

4. It is necessary to provide for the creation of a drainage system that will allow excess water to flow out of the pit. Gravel, crushed stone or broken brick will do.

5. Put a lid on the hole to protect it from animals and precipitation. Without a lid, it will be more difficult to maintain humidity and temperature inside the hole.

6. Add organic material to the pit every 2-3 weeks to maintain the composting process.

7. Stir the compost periodically, which can improve the quality of the fertilizer and the speed of composting.
