What to do with tulips after flowering: don't miss one important moment

After tulips have finished blooming, it is too early for gardeners to relax or switch their attention to other plants.

After the petals of the dried buds fall off, you need to continue to care for the plant just as carefully. This will determine how lushly it will bloom next year.

Let's figure out what to do with tulips after flowering.

1. Remove the buds

This is only done with dry inflorescences. The petals will fall off on their own, but if you do not remove the remains, the plant will spend some of its energy on seed ripening. Because of this, the buds will not be as bright and large in the new season.

2. Life goes on

Even after flowering, the plant continues to develop. Tulips are watered even when the stems and leaves turn yellow. The soil should be soaked to a depth of 30-40 cm. Water for 2 weeks after flowering, and then reduce the intensity.

3. New season

It is necessary to add potassium-phosphorus fertilizer. Mineral additives: 30 g superphosphate and 20 g potassium sulfate per 1 square meter.

Florists do not recommend using potassium salt and potassium chloride.

Organics: ash infusion (3 tbsp per 1 l of water). Infuse for 2 days, then water.

Ready-made fertilizers are also used.

4. Loosen the soil

Bulbs need oxygen to develop. Therefore, you need to loosen the soil and remove weeds. You can combine the procedure with watering.

5. Dig up the bulbs

If the plant stem can be easily wound around a finger, then you can dig up the tubers and prepare them for storage. Otherwise, you need to wait until they ripen.
