What needs to be done to ensure that an apple tree bears fruit every year: it’s not just about the variety

Every summer resident dreams of harvesting juicy and aromatic apples every year.

This can be achieved by taking into account several nuances. Plant care and properly selected varieties will allow you to harvest every year.

Old varieties

The periodicity of fruiting is typical for old varieties: Antonovka, White filling, Moscow pear, Aport, Scarlet anise, etc. With age, this feature becomes pronounced in these varieties.

However, old varieties on dwarf clonal rootstocks gradually smooth out the periodicity. Even "Antonovka" yields a harvest every year. Of course, it is small, but there are apples.

New varieties

If new varieties bear fruit once every two years, the problem lies in the lack of pruning. Normal pruning is designed to remove excess ovaries, part of the potential harvest before the tree blooms.

How to fix the situation

At the end of winter, high-quality pruning is carried out, including sanitary and formative pruning. The result should be a reduction in the volume of the crown and a decrease in the number of flower buds.

A large harvest this year is highly likely to indicate that the tree will “rest” next season and will not produce a harvest.

Thus, annual fruiting can be expected if normal pruning is carried out, which helps the tree save energy and “not overwork itself.”
