There are two options for the location of the compost heap.

So, organic remains can be sent to a pit. Or - to a box. Let's look at the second option in more detail.

When choosing a container for compost, many gardeners make serious mistakes, resulting in the loss of valuable fertilizer.

What rules should be followed when choosing a compost bin?

Availability of a lid

The compost bin must have a lid.

What is it for? The answer is simple: to protect the contents from precipitation.

If rain or snow gets into the compost mass, it will be left without useful compounds: they will simply be washed away.

Presence of side openings

There should be holes on the side surfaces of the container for ventilation.

If the walls are solid, then little oxygen will enter the box. Problems may also arise with excess moisture.

The result may be the beginning of such an unpleasant process as rotting. The compost heap will no longer be suitable for adding to the soil.

It is worth emphasizing: ventilation holes are needed only on the walls. But the lid of the box should not have any holes or cracks.
