The harvest of one of the most popular berry crops can unpleasantly surprise with its meagerness and small berries.
Even beginners will be able to collect a large volume of aromatic juicy berries if they organize proper care.
What care does black currant need?
Like other plants, currants need good soil, timely watering and fertilizing, without which it will not be possible to grow a bountiful harvest.
How to plant currants correctly
The preferred planting option is spring. Humus, double superphosphate, and potassium sulfate can be added to the hole for currants. Dolomite flour is added to acidic soil.
How to feed black currants
You can ensure abundant fruiting if you carry out four fertilizings per season.
During bud break:
- add one tablespoon of ammonium nitrate per 5 liters of water, consumption – one bucket per bush.
In July, the following fertilizer will be useful:
- We water the bushes, two buckets for each, with a solution of 0.5 l of mullein, 250 ml of bird droppings infusion per 5 l of water.
At the end of September – the third feeding:
- Mix 100 g of double superphosphate, a quarter cup of potassium sulfate and scatter evenly around the tree trunk, then work into the soil.
At the end of October – the fourth feeding:
- Add half a bucket of humus under each bush and distribute.
Red currants only need to be fed twice per season:
- at the time when the buds open and at the end of September.
