Straw, hay, sawdust, pine needles are common types of mulch that gardeners use year after year.

In addition to the classic varieties, there are also some less common types of mulch.

Many gardeners like to experiment, including with the choice of material to cover the soil in the garden bed.

Non-standard option

Sunflower husks are quite popular. You can find rave reviews online in which amateur gardeners recommend using this material as mulch.

Before using sunflower husks, it is worth finding out what other gardeners think about it. After all, not everyone is delighted with this material.

What is the downside?

Mulch from husks is a dud, say experienced gardeners. It turns out that husks draw nutrients from the soil that could benefit plants.

Therefore, before mulching with husks, you will have to add additional fertilizer. However, this is unnecessary trouble that practical gardeners do not need.

Such mulch is unacceptable for carrots, cabbage and radishes. The fruits of the first two crops will be smaller than they could be, and the radishes may not sprout.

Sunflower husks are more useful as drainage material. Simply pour them into the bottom of the planter and then add soil for the plant.
