In the spring, all gardeners who grow currants, without exception, take up scissors and pruning shears to carry out sanitary pruning.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh draws attention to the fact that the procedure should be carried out before the buds swell and the sap begins to flow actively.

During sanitary pruning, the rules of which are the same for everyone, it is worth removing dried, frozen branches, diseased and thin shoots, shoots that thicken the bush, as well as dark brown old branches.

Then it is worth starting formative pruning, during which it is necessary to leave 5-7 buds on the lateral 2-4-year-old shoots of black currant bushes, and remove the rest.

One-year-old strong shoots need to be shortened by 10-15 cm.

Since the branches of red and white currants retain high productivity for up to 8 years, it is worth leaving not only young but also old shoots.

Owners of such varieties need to cut off only the upper unripe parts on the shoots, get rid of water sprouts and the oldest branches. Do not touch the first and second order branches.

As a result of pruning, you will get a bush consisting of 20-25 branches aged 1-8 years.
