When choosing the time to sow cabbage seedlings, much depends on the variety.
There is no point in sowing in January or February – it is too early. At the end of May – it is too late. Almost every gardener is familiar with this truism.
Each summer resident determines the specific date individually, based on the climatic features of the region, the weather forecast, folk signs and the lunar calendar.
But approximate dates that claim to be universal do exist. They will help you not to miss the sowing time.
When to sow cabbage for seedlings
As experienced gardeners say, everything depends on the cabbage variety. There are three main periods:
- the early variety is sown for seedlings from the beginning of March until the 25th-28th of the first month of spring;
- mid-season cabbage is sown from approximately March 25 to April 15;
- Seeds of late varieties are placed in the soil from April 10 to the 25th-30th.
Another small hint that will help you get your bearings. So, when choosing the sowing period, remember that about 10 days pass before the first shoots appear. Add about 50-55 days to this, when you can plant in a permanent place.
Thus, 60-65 days pass from sowing seedlings to transplanting into open ground.
Cabbage is a light-loving crop that prefers coolness to heat. In warmth, seedlings stretch out a lot. It has been noted that cabbage sprouts and develops well in cold greenhouses. But it is important that there is no minus (+1 … +5 °C is acceptable).
